Sometimes it’s best not to go back.

Take Danger Mouse. I remember it being somewhat awesome, for reasons unclear — one of those shows you watch in a TV binge when you’re home sick from school, and Nickelodeon had “Pinwheel” and “Turkey TV” and somewhere in there was “Danger Mouse.” I remember puns and Pinfold. Well, I got some seasons on DVD, watched one, and I rather wish I hadn’t. It… it wasn’t. I’m sure the first episode isn’t indicative but.. but… I can’t.

Anybody want some DVDs?

Then there are shows that I KNOW were bad, but for which my memory grows fonder every day, like Sally Jupiter for the Comedian, but without all the face-punching. One of these would be Dungeons and Dragons.

I KNOW it was bad. I know Bobby shouted “Uni” more than Inuyasha shouts “Kagome.” I know it was violent and strange. I know it is probably nigh-unwatchable now. I DON’T CARE.

This topic came up because SOMEONE for SOME REASON didn’t like being compared to Presto the Wizard.

You think it’s hard working with me? I have to work with me ALL THE TIME.

Now would be a good time to mention that I identified with Presto the Wizard with a stabbing discomfort akin to watching “30 Rock” with your dad. This is what I remember best. Presto just could not make good. He just kept letting himself and his friends down, again… and again… and again.

But he would make good in the end, I was sure of it — because if there was no hope for Presto, there was no hope for me.

I like to think Albert’s out there today, thirty-something, working some kind of program, taking 3 AM calls from Eric the Cavalier and winning prizes for most-improved.

So there’s that.
